The integrated social media layout tool enables the automated customization of posts using predefined templates and corporate design guidelines. HektAR

In HektAR, players take control of a small virtual farm to meet the needs of a growing community as sustainably as possible. Resources such as land, water and labor can be used to grow various crops as well as to buy and care for animals. The game deals with topics related to food production as well as weather events caused by climate change. Players learn about the demand for agricultural products, the relationship to climate, seasonality, soil degradation, water consumption, and the needs of animals. At the same time, as production increases, various phenomena related to climate change slowly begin to affect the environment. These phenomena include droughts and increased rainfall, which can affect the soil and water supply, as well as pests and diseases that can inhibit crop growth. These events force players to make tough choices that may influence their ability to provide for their community and/or contribute to further climate change events.

Food Net Lab

As part of the research project, an interactive application was developed to survey visitors about future dietary concepts. Five narrative scenarios on food production and consumption are presented by a virtual robot. Voting is conducted according to the “1, 2, or 3” principle by positioning oneself in the room, which is tracked via laser tracking. InterPlayces

The project proposal InterPlayces introduces an approach for conceptualizing and creating intergenerational game and interaction designs for the older and younger generation via a co-located playground. With these playful artifacts the social and emotional well-being, as well as the bond between young and old are fostered. Games and playful mechanics are utilized to initialize and strengthen the knowledge transfer and exchange between the generations. To reach the defined research goals, game design concepts are developed that address the various needs and requirements of the different player groups. This is achieved through player roles that are adapted to the needs of the players, as well as via effective and intuitive interaction techniques and methods.

Play!UC

Complex urban development projects require the involvement of multiple stakeholders who can all significantly affect their budgets, acceptance and overall success. Although a number of participatory processes have been developed for such scenarios, challenges such as maintaining long-term participant motivation and reaching traditionally underrepresented members of the population remain. Serious games have been used in various other contexts to motivate participation and promote the understanding of complex issues, but not in a co-located participatory setting. Play!UC seeks to investigate to what extent computer games can be used to support participatory processes in urban development projects. Specifically, the research project focuses on the target group of young adults and decisions they make that can affect their carbon footprints. By examining game mechanics from existing and novel game approaches and their potential for use in participatory processes, Play!UC aims to create a toolbox of relevant mechanics for urban development scenarios. These mechanics will be tested in a total of three Living Lab environments in Holland, Belgium and Austria, resulting in a tested suite of applicable game-based methods that can be used in urban development and other participatory contexts.

The Virtual House of Medusa

The Virtual House of Medusa (VHM) is an interactive co-located VR installation for a museum context that was developed in collaboration with the Federal Monuments Authority Austria and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, to illustrate several fragments of Roman wall paintings. These archaeological artefacts were found at Lorch near Enns in Upper Austria and are one of the most important finds of provincial Roman wall paintings in Austria. The VHM is a playful installation with multiple virtual workstations, including one VR player and up to four fellow co-players. The players slip into the roles of archaeologists and experience the feeling that the past is being brought back to life piece by piece from a pile of shards. The fascination of their work is carried from workstation to workstation.

The ZIEGE Game Editor is intended as an introductory game development tool for children from nine to fourteen years of age. Entirely browser-based, it allows young game designers to use both existing game assets and add their own to create simply game levels of their own design. Users can gain some insight into the concepts involved in basic game development without requiring any previous experience with programming and then publish their game online for others to play.

The aim of the BlindBits project, coordinated by the Austrian Institute of Technology and carried out in cooperation with the Bundes-Blindenerziehungsinstitut and the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, is to support the learning of routes using a digital educational game.
